Printing a person-shaped cutout — what the services require, what you can do yourself, and where the transparent PNG fits

Somewhere between 2020 and now, ordering a piece of board cut into the shape of a person became a completely normal thing for ordinary people to do. Baseball stadiums spent a season seating cardboard fans. Graduation ceremonies and senior nights sprouted oversized "big head" faces on sticks. And in Korea, a life-size standee of the guest of honor became standard furniture at the fan-run birthday cafes that now fill whole neighborhoods. Every one of these products starts from the same raw material: one photo with the background taken off, so a printer can cut along a person's outline. This post walks through what the services behind each of these actually publish as requirements — their own specs, not folklore — and is honest about which parts a browser background remover like NearBG does for you and which parts it never touches.

The cardboard-fan season that mainstreamed the format

When the 2020 baseball season started with empty stands, teams sold fans the next best thing to attendance. Front Office Sports documented the mechanics at the time: fans paid online and uploaded a photo of themselves, and the images went out to local printers who produced the cutouts and delivered them to the ballpark. Prices ran from just under $30 for Premier Lacrosse League cutouts to $299 for some Dodger Stadium seats. What a full-service big-head shop asks of you (less than you'd think)

What it does not ask you to do is remove the background. "We will die-cut the face cut out signs into the unique shape of your photo," the page says — their designers silhouette the head, build the cutline, and send a free design proof before printing onto corrugated plastic at 12×18 inches ("true human head size," as they put it) or 24×36.

That's worth saying plainly, because this blog tries not to oversell its own tool: if you order from a full-service cutout shop, you do not need NearBG or any background remover. The shop's designers do that step. Your only real job on that path is the one their specs describe — start from a large, sharp original photo, not a screenshot or a re-compressed social-media copy. The transparent PNG earns its place on the other two paths: doing it yourself, and self-service printing.

The DIY path starts with background removal — their words, not ours

Sign printer YardSignPlus publishes a DIY guide for making big-head cutouts at home, and its first step is the subject of this entire website: "Start by cropping tightly around the face and removing the background." Its suggested tools are "Background removal apps, photo editors like Canva or Photoshop, or free browser-based tools," and its photo advice mirrors the pro shops at smaller scale: "At least 1 MB file size. Larger is better for big prints." From there the guide is scissors-and-glue territory — print at size, mount to foam board or thick cardboard, cut the silhouette with scissors or a craft knife, optionally add a paint-stirrer or dowel handle.

The step the guide doesn't examine is what "free browser-based tools" means in practice: most of them work by uploading the photo to a server, and Canva's one-click remover sits behind a Pro plan (this blog's photo cut-out trend post walks through that). For a party prop of your own kid, your friend, or the graduate, the custody question is the same one this blog keeps returning to — whether a copy of the photo needs to exist on a stranger's server at all. Korea's version: the birthday-cafe standee and the self-service print shop

Korean fan culture built its own person-shaped print economy. At fan-organized birthday cafes — rented cafes decorated for an idol's birthday — the standee is part of the standard set dressing: a Seoul Economic Daily reporter's November 2021 visit to one such cafe for a Lovelyz member opened with "a banner with her photo and a life-size standee greeting visitors at the cafe entrance." The format has only grown since; Herald Business reported that by the fan-event app Offmate's count, some 100 birthday cafes open in a single day around Seoul's Hongdae and Hapjeong area alone, in a culture that took off in earnest during the pandemic.

The printing behind those standees is often self-service, and self-service is where the file requirements come back to you.
